The Giffnock and Clarkston Chess Club has been in existence for more than 50 years. We have members covering all chess levels and are always open to all new members, no matter the standard.

We have various competitions running through the year, September to April. There are 3 main trophies - the club championship - played for by the strongest players in the club; the Mercury (donated by the Mercury newspaper) played by the next strongest players and the AT Mays (donated by the travel company) contested by the remainder.

In addition to these, there is the Olscot trophy, which is played throughout the year more on a 'casual' basis - the more times you attend, the more games you play in this competition and hence the better your chances of winning it! The Brodie Cup is another favourite, played under time-handicap rules.

There is also a Rapid Play and 2 Allegro trophies played for once a year by all those interested.

We have 4 teams in the Glasgow league, in divisions 1, 3 and 5, and indeed have won this prestigious competition in the past. The highest scoring A team member at the end of the year gains the Founders Cup, a trophy kindly donated by Malcolm King, who was a keen and regular member until his recent death.

We also have a thriving junior section, of up to 20 children under 14 years. They can play for 2 trophies during the year, the Drumby, a 7 round event, and the Under 14 Knock Out. There is also a Best Newcomer award for the best new junior. We also run at least 1 junior team, competing in the Glasgow Junior League and hope to regain the title that we won in the inaugral year 3 years ago.
