Giffnock & Clarkston Chess Club
Meets : Tuesday, 7.40pm, WhiteCraigs Bowling Club,
Newton Mearns, (near Eastwood Toll),
Glasgow
- Our objectives: to maintain
a club for members to play chess; to promote chess
through recruitment of members of all ages; to provide
tuition for beginners; the opportunity to compete
individually for club trophies and as members of teams in
League matches.
- Founded in 1948, the club
is one of the largest in Glasgow, with some 50 plus
members, 1/3 under the age of 14.
- The club is forms part of
the Glasgow League, entering 3 adult and 1 junior teams.
- The club's annual
subscription is currently £40 for adults, £15 for under
14s, and £25 for seniors and un-employed.
- Prospective members are not
asked to join until they have attended the club three
times.
- Club officers are elected
at the Annual General Meeting, always on the 2nd last
Tuesday of the season.
- The club own 10 trophies
& cups for which members compete.
- The Club affiliates to
Chess Scotland (created when the Scottish Chess
Association and Scottish Junior Chess Association
almalgamated) which co-ordinates chess in Scotland. Chess
Scotland, founded in 1884 in Glasgow, is the oldest
National chess organisation.
- Members are urged to join
Chess Scotland and to buy the bi-monthly SCOTTISH CHESS.
Full annual membership of Chess Scotland, including
bi-monthly Scottish Chess is £26.50.
- There are about 45 chess
clubs in Scotland, divided into 9 Leagues. We are in the
Glasgow League.
